Personally I just used a normal Urf Shakur build for my hammer hero.
Earth Shaker
Crude Swing
Crushing Blow
*some skill I don't remember*
Enraging Charge
Flail
For Great Justice!
Res Sig
Works good enough for me, he's been through Slaver's HM without needing to be microed.

Yeti smash I think is the common slot for that last hero spot. I don't really know how effective crude swing is for them isn't that the aoe whirlwind type attack? Usually most monsters don't ball up on them but who knows. I have to agree though that earthshaker is the way to go.

Not sure that I'd even bother with a melee hero, they tend to be rather stupid. However, if you really do insist on it....
Erf Shaukr is the only good hammer elite for pve. WE is viable, though far better suited to other weapons, There would be no real reason to run a WE hammer in pve.
Others have already made fairly good suggestions, though I would also consider running counter blow, which is decent as it's condition will be fulfilled very often, and it doesn't have any major drawback aside from missing +damage. Not entirely sure on hero effectiveness with crude swing, probably not something I would run.
You could also consider some utility from a secondary class. On a human Erf Shakur I find that Grasping Earth is an amazing snare, and I see no reason why heroes wouldn't use it at least semi-effectively.

My hammer-hero build is pretty similar to zelgadissan's. I use [pulverizing smash] instead of [crushing blow]; I remember getting into a whole argument about it with someone on here, and I still think [pulverizing smash] is better for PvE.
I have him as W/Rt so that he can bring [death pact signet].

I would probably try it with Grasping Earth, cheap cost AE snare with a fair duration at low attribute investment.

My build for Jora also uses Earth Shaker and Pulverizing Smash. In areas where a MM is not a good choice, I generally take a hammer hero instead, as it seems to be quite effective. Don't forget to give your hero a Stonefist insignia on gloves, boots, or helmet.

I use zelgadissan-like shaker with yet smash in 'i dont remeber' slot and Watch Yourself! insteaf of flail or res if paired with character that does not have SY!, 9+1 tactics, 9+1 strenght, 12+2 hammer.
That 18 armor is well worth it.

The only hammer skill I find useful on a hero is Earth Shaker. However, when I need this on my team I run it on a derv tank instead of a warrior...I like its survivability better and because the KD is more valuable to me than the spike damage it works really well. I am not on my computer with my templates, but I this the bar goes something like:
Faithful Intervention
Mystic Vigor
Earth Shaker
Yeti Smash
Crude Swing
For Great Justice
"None Shall Pass" or "Watch Yourself" (but requires tactics)
Mystic Regen
I find that heros use "None Shall Pass" pretty well and is really useful when pulling mobs towards you.

Well the idea was to try new things. See different forms of play instead of the Triple Necro, and farm ectos for 3 months straight, or flavor of the week PvP builds. I'm thinking Pulverize and Earthshaker are the good calls here. Also Yeti Smash is good too.

Every once in a while you have to. Try doing Jennur's Horde without Koss!
